It glows by bouncing light from intense nearby stars. Together with it appear several blue tinted reflective clouds, one region that shines red due to emissions, plenty of dark lanes that block light, and a varied collection of stars in many colors. Just as artists pick ordinary objects for non-representational pieces, the mix of gases, particles, and bright objects seen here occurs regularly inside huge areas where stars are actively forming. Such an area sits inside the constellation known as the Unicorn or Monoceros. The large molecular cloud called Mon R2 lies surprisingly near to us, with estimates placing it around 2400 light years distant.
